The Hagmann trombone concept is an unprecedented entry to excellence so much its sound goes beyond comparison.

The first contact with a Hagmann trombone will be disconcerting for the newcomer, so much does it improve on the performance over a traditional symphonic model.

Thanks to the clever designer’s revolutionary valve and ingenious peripheral accessories (ergonomic levers, comfortable hand rest, tone rings, exclusively designed connecting wraps and, above all, the Vibrabell bell attachment system), the sound becomes more homogeneous in all registers.

The inherent issues of the traditional trombone are definitively solved, as in the case of an F attachment trombone, the derivation of the F circuit leads to considerable resistance. This adversely affects emission balance, dynamics, and homogeneity between registers.

The Hagmann wrap and valve design solve those problems, while preserving the color and tone essential to the performance of the most demanding pieces. Of course, this also applies to two-valved trombones of the lower registers.

The musician can assort his new instrument, or the one he has chosen to have customize, to a specific slide and a bell to fully meet his expectations.

The Master Builder & the Hagmann Custom Shop

Claudio Maragno is our master builder. He is a brass instruments specialist, especially in the trombone field, which is the instrument he plays. He will assist you to choose your new Hagmann custom trombone, or to customize your own.

His career has started with an apprenticeship followed by an employment contract at Haag, the famous Kreuzlingen (Switzerland), before joining our workshop to build Hagmann valves.

He went on to develop wraps processing for Hagmann custom trombones, as also helping to improve the production of valves, levers, hand rests and many other items that today are the flagships of our accessory brass manufacturing. Today, he manages a team of precision engineers dedicated to repairs plus an assistant builder, as well as building specific parts and sharing his advisory expertise with customers.

Claudio is vivacious, enthusiastic and, above all, meticulous. He combines seriousness with creativity. He has a friendly approach and will put at ease any musician wishing to customize his trombone. Although being a disciple of René Hagmann, he nevertheless has his own cosmetic ideas to what could be made available to many musicians sharing the same bold approach (sandblasted bell finish, colored screws, etc.).

We are thrilled to benefit from his collaboration and enthusiasm in a challenge that remains relevant today and is constantly evolving towards new horizons.

The “Vibrabell” system: our exclusive concept

Combined with the slide, the bell is a decisive element in the sound. Available in different sizes, alloys and designs, it generates specific volume and projection (some American trombonists use a bass bell on their tenor model to make it sound even larger).
What we call the “Vibrabell” is a detachable “floating” bell with variable rigidity mounting depending on its fastening.

Our exclusive concept for convertible instruments has the following characteristics:

It features a new mounting bracket: this mounting (half/half with soft contact pad) is tension- and stress-free and can be easily assembled or disassembled. Alignment with the tuning slide tubes is self-evident. Two knurled screws secure the bell, from floating to firm, depending on how those screws are fastened. Depending on the resistance generated, the sound will vary subtly and progressively. The two screws can be easily tightened or loosened by hand, without tools.

This frees the bell from all strains that traditionally occur when soldered or caused by axially screwed fasteners: thanks to our radial fastening concept, the bell is held in a flexible way, floating according to how it is tightened. The “VIBRABELL” bell produces enhances the emission, with a rounder, broader, richer sound. It substantially enriches the overall sonority.

This system also compounds other advantages, whose modularity. On the one hand, it allows you to combine the best suited bell to the instrument, as to the repertoire, as it is sometimes essential to have additional bells, like for example, a simple tenor section, with no valve nor F wrap.

The “vibrabell” system combines bell interchangeability with undeniable acoustic improvement.

Hagmann circuits and their mechanics

In addition to the valve, the wrap of a symphonic, tenor or bass trombone is a major element in sound quality and emission. Its geometry is decisive for its overall acoustics, and is linked to a precise, meticulous manufacturing quality for which our master builder, Claudio Maragno, holds no secrets. Every part of our wraps is manufactured in our workshops, giving us a wealth of experience in the field, the result of constant research related to masses, materials used and different bores for the pleasure of professional musicians and knowledgeable amateurs alike.

The manufacturing process involves machining, turning, milling, bending, and soldering. It’s all done in our premises. The quality of the polishing is also an important element that Claudio masters to perfection. Claudio’s passion for research has led him to many improvements on the above operations.

This involves minute details unknown by the musician, such as the option of soft tin soldering combined with an alloy chosen by experience. Strong silver solder is also used at key spots.

The circuits have various bore thicknesses and diameters, chosen according to their geometry. Alloys (nickel silver, brass, pink brass) are sourced from Germany and ordered according to the thickness of the raw material.

We have the weakness to believe our wraps are the best available worldwide considering the substantial improvement in acoustics they generate.
